The Cosmic Science Research Division conducts observational research in astrophysics using astronomical observation as its primary methodology, alongside research and development of next-generation observation instruments and technologies, and the planning and execution of new space projects.

Principal research fields include: cosmology and stellar formation theory; high-energy astrophysical phenomena; phenomena on quark stars; aerospace engineering (rockets, probes, satellites, propulsion, orbital mechanics, control engineering); space resource utilisation (lunar and asteroid resource retrieval, extraterrestrial energy sources); and planetary environmental management. Research objects range from planets, moons, and asteroids to stars, star clusters, star-forming regions, protostars, supernovae and their remnants, the interstellar medium, exoplanets, the cosmic microwave background, and baryon acoustic oscillations.

Aerospace engineering R&D is conducted in collaboration with the Technology Development Research Division, focusing on next-generation propulsion systems, X-ray and infrared telescopes, and other advanced observation technologies.
